OBJECTIVES: Recent studies highlighted the role of miR expressed in saliva as reliable diagnostic and prognostic tools in the long-term monitoring of cancer processes such as oral squamous carcinoma (OSCC). Based on a few previous studies, it seems the miR-3928 can be considered a master regulator in carcinogenesis, and it can be therapeutically exploited. This is the first study that compared oral potentially malignant disorder (OLP) and malignant (OSCC) lesions for miR-3928 expression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, saliva samples from 30 healthy control individuals, 30 patients with erosive/atrophic oral lichen planus, and 31 patients with OSCC were collected. The evaluation of miR-3928 expression by q-PCR and its correlation with clinicopathological indices were analyzed by Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal-Wallis, Pearson's χ2 , and Mann-Whitney tests. The p-value less than .05 indicated statistically significant results. RESULTS: Based on nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test results, there was a statistically significant difference between the ages of three study groups (p < .05). This test demonstrated a statistically significant difference between the average of miR-3928 expression in three study groups (p < .05). The result of the χ2  test showed a statistically significant difference in miR-3928 expression between patients with OLP (p = .01) and also patients with OSCC (p < .0001) in comparison to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The salivary miR-3928 can play a tumor suppressive role in the pathobiology of OSCC, and it is significantly downregulated in patients. According to the potential tumor suppressive role of miR-3928 in the OSCC process, we can consider this microRNA as a biomarker for future early diagnosis, screening, and potential target therapy.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oral lichen planus (OLP) are two separate conditions affecting the mouth and result in varying clinical outcomes and levels of malignancy. Achieving early diagnosis and effective therapy planning requires the identification of reliable diagnostic biomarkers for these disorders. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have recently received attention as powerful biomarkers for various illnesses, including cancer. In particular, miR-483-5p is a promising diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in various cancers. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the role of serum miR-483-5p in the diagnosis and prognosis of OLP and OSCC patients by in silico analysis of differential gene expression. METHODS: GSE23558 and GSE52130 data sets were selected, and differential gene expression analysis was performed using microarray data from GSE52130 and GSE23558. The analysis focused on comparing OLP and OSCC samples with normal samples. The genes intersected through the differential gene expression analysis were then extracted to determine the overlapping genes among the upregulated or downregulated DEGs. The downregulated genes among the DEGs were subsequently imported into the miRWalk database to search for potential target genes of miRNA 483-5p that lacked validation. To gain insight into the biological pathways associated with the DEGs, we conducted pathway analysis utilizing tools, such as Enrichr. Additionally, the cellular components associated with these DEGs were investigated by analyzing the String database. On the other hand, blood serum samples were collected from 35 OSCC patients, 34 OLP patients, and 34 healthy volunteers. The expression level of miR-483-5p was determined using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The Kruskal-Wallis test was utilized to investigate the considerable correlation. Moreover, this study explored the prognostic value of miR-483-5p through its association with clinicopathological parameters in OSCC patients. RESULTS: The results showed that serum expression of miR-483-5p was considerably higher in OSCC patients compared to OLP patients and healthy controls (p 0.0001) and that this difference was statistically significant. Furthermore, elevated miR-483-5p expression was associated with tumor size, lymph node metastasis, and stage of tumor nodal metastasis in OSCC patients (p 0.001, p 0.038, and p 0.0001, respectively). In silico analysis found 71 upregulated genes at the intersection of upregulated DEGs and 44 downregulated genes at the intersection of downregulated DEGs, offering insight into the potential underlying mechanisms of miR-483-5p's engagement in OSCC and OLP. The majority of these DEGs were found to be involved in autophagy pathways, but DEGs involved in the histidine metabolism pathway showed significant results. Most of these DEGs were located in the extracellular region. After screening for downregulated genes that were invalidated, miRNA 483-5p had 7 target genes. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the potential of serum miR-483-5p as a promising diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in OSCC and OLP patients. Its upregulation in OSCC patients and its association with advanced tumor stage and potential metastasis suggest the involvement of miR-483-5p in critical signaling pathways involved in cell proliferation, apoptosis, and cell cycle regulation, making it a reliable indicator of disease progression. Nevertheless, additional experimental studies are essential to validate these findings and establish a foundation for the advancement of targeted therapies and personalized treatment approaches.

Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide. Since there are many factors that influence the development of cancer, identifying risk factors plays an important role in cancer prevention. The aim of this study was therefore to identify the risk factors for HNSCC in Mashhad, Iran. Methods: In this case-control study, 76 patients with HNSCC were included as the case and 91 healthy people as the control group. A checklist of risk factors was completed for each participant and the two groups were compared for the presence of risk factors. Chi-square, t test, and Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare the data. Odds ratios (ORs) for several factors have also been determined. Findings: The educational level and body mass index (BMI) of the patients in the case group were significantly lower than in the control group (P<0.001). Moreover, there were significant differences between the two groups in terms of risk factors such as tobacco smoking, the number of cigarettes smoked per day, and its duration (P=0.001, P<0.001, P=0.05), as well as the duration of hookah smoking, opium consumed per day and use of alcohol (P=0.023, P<0.001, P=0.015). Conclusion: There was a direct relationship between HNSCC and risk factors such as cigarette smoking, number of cigarettes smoked per day, duration of cigarette consumption and hookah, opium consumed per day, and alcohol use. However, extensive studies with larger sample sizes are needed to better assess the impact of these factors and generalize the results.

Background and aims: Rising levels of oxidative stress play an important role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to some assess salivary antioxidants in patients with type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, and healthy control. We also assessed the potential clinical relevance of salivary antioxidants with glycemic control. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 30 prediabetes, 31 type 2 diabetes, and 39 sex-matched normoglycemic individuals. To assess the salivary oxidative status, we measured the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), the total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and uric acid (UA) by spectrophotometry. Results: Salivary MDA levels were significantly higher in individuals with diabetes compared to prediabetes, and control groups (p = 0.001). MDA and SOD were significantly correlated with fasting blood sugar (FBS) and HbA1C (p < 0.001, r = 0.43, p < 0.001, r = 0.34, and p = 0.003, r = 0.29 p = 0.01, r = 0.23 respectively). Salivary TAC was also significantly correlated with FBS (p = 0.02, r = 0.23). Furthermore, salivary MDA was an independent determinant of type 2 diabetic patients compared to healthy subjects (p = 0.04). According to the cutoff point in the ROC curve, the MDA index was below 2.8 in 82.1% of the controls (specificity), and it was above 2.8 in 64.2% of the Individuals with diabetes (sensitivity). Conclusion: The simultaneous assessment of salivary oxidative and antioxidant factors, revealed weak but a significant positive association between MDA and glycemic status in diabetes. However, further investigations are required to confirm our results.

BACKGROUND: Oral cancers are the sixth most common cancers around the world. According to the pivotal role of immune cells in the pathogenesis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), as the frequent form of malignant epithelial neoplasm in the oral cavity, we investigated the association between the expression of RORγt and T-bet genes as two transcription factors, clinicopathologic indices, and survival rate. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Forty-two OSCC paraffin embded-blocks tissue samples and their surgical healthy margins (as a control group) were collected. Demographic information like age and gender, and medical history including tumor stage/grade, and following-up time were registered. The RORγt and T-bet expression were assessed by qPCR. The overall survival (OS) and disease free survival (DFS) were analyzed by SPSS V.23 software. RESULTS: The expression of RORγt and T-bet genes in OSCC patients were significantly higher than in surgical healthy margins (P < 0.001). Both expression demonstrated a significant difference between surgical healthy margins and tumor tissues related to gender and clinicopathological indices including stage and grade (P < 0.05). The expression of both genes in stage I patients was significant compared to stage IV (P < 0.05). The relation between expressions, OS, and DFS with clinical stage and histological grade of tumors was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Overexpression of RORγt and T-bet in OSCC patients with higher grade and stage in compare to surgical healthy margin highlighted their critical role in OSCC pathogenesis including oral epithelial cell differentiation, tumorigenesis process, and malignant transformation. Moreover, both mentioned genes can apply as prognostic biomarkers in OSCC patients. We suggest surgical healthy margin be considered as valuable biological area.

Background: The oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) composes about 90% of all head and neck cancers. The toll-like receptor (TLR)+ immune cells have potential of invasion and malignancy transformation. The aim of this study was assessment of possible associations between clinicopathological indices and TLR2 and TLR9 gene expression in OSCC. Methods: Forty-two OSCC samples with related healthy margins including 25 early and 17 advanced stages were gathered. The samples were classified histologically from grade I to II. The expression of TLR2 and TLR2 was evaluated by Real-time PCR. The patient's disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed using SPSS V.23 software. Results: The expression of TLR2 and TLR9 genes in tumor tissues (especially in grade I and II) were higher than healthy surgical margin tissue (p< 0.001). TLR9 expression in grade II was statistically significant than grade I in tumor tissue (p< 0.001). TLR9 expression in advanced stage was statistically significant in compare to early stage (p= 0.012). In advanced stage both overall survival (p= 0.029) and disease-free survival (p= 0.012) were statistically lower than early stage. The follow-up time to recurrence in advanced stage was statistically lower than early stage (p= 0.007). Conclusion: Overexpression of TLRs 2, 9 play role in the pathogenesis and tumor development of OSCC and can be applied as biomarker in prognostic approaches.

BACKGROUND: Given the importance of the role of cellular changes in the prognosis and diagnosis of malignancies of the head and neck, we examined in this study the gene expressions of cathepsin-B (Cat-B) and caveolin-1 (Cav-1) which are in cell membranes structures involved in carcinogenesis, in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oral lichen planus (OLP) and compared them to controls. We also investigated their relationship to clinicopathological indices. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this case-control study, 29 paraffin blocks of OLP patients were compared to 29 paraffin blocks of OSCC samples as well as 28 paraffin blocks of normal oral tissue. Real-time quantitative PCR was performed to determine gene expressions and results were analyzed for their relationship to clinical data using chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. RESULTS: The mean age of OSCC and OLP patients were 59.24 ± 15.04 and 48.79 ± 14.17 years, respectively. The Cat-B and Cav-1 expressions were significantly higher in OSCC and OLP samples compared to control (p < 0.001). The highest expression was found in OSCC samples. The difference between OLP and control samples for Cat-B and Cav-1 expression was significant. There was no association between the gene expression and age, gender, duration of disease, Thongprasom score, smoking and cutaneous lichen planus. However, the expressions were related to the grade and stage of OSCC samples (P = 0.01, P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: The gene expressions of Cat-B and Cav-1 in OSCC were associated with the stage and grade of lesions. Therefore, they appear to be useful in predicting the biological behavior of OSCC and malignant transformation of OLP, although this process is multi factorial and more investigations are needed.

Diabetes mellitus is mostly interrelated to deficiency in wound healing. Low-level laser therapy has been shown to exert reliable effects on the acceleration of wound healing process. This study aimed to determine the potential influence of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the healing of extraction sockets in diabetic rats. A total of 24 healthy male Wistar rats were selected for this study. After diabetes induction, the maxillary first molars of all rats were extracted bilaterally. Then, the animals were subjected either to Ga-Al-As laser at 808 nm or to Al-Ga-In-P laser at 660 nm at the right extracted socket every day for the next 14 days. The left sockets served as controls. Rats were sacrificed on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 14th days after tooth extraction. The samples were examined by a pathologist. LLLT at 808 nm was able to significantly repress inflammation, improve osteoid formation, and promote vascularization in comparison to the non-treated sockets. LLLT at 660 nm significantly suppressed inflammation and developed vascularization in comparison to the non-treated sockets, but failed to improve osteoid formation in the treated sockets. This study suggests that LLLT could be considered as a reliable treatment for wound healing in diabetic experimental rats.

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus is an autoimmune blistering disease of the skin and mucous membranes caused by autoantibodies against desmoglein 1 (Dsg1) and desmoglein 3 (Dsg3). Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is the most common form of pemphigus. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between the levels of anti-desmoglein 1 and 3 autoantibodies and the severity of PV disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nineteen newly diagnosed patients with pemphigus vulgaris were enrolled in this study. The titers of Dsg in subjects by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were done at diagnosis time-point, 4th and 8th weeks after the initiation of treatment, and the correlation of antibodies with the oral and skin disease severity was evaluated. RESULTS: The severity of cutaneous lesions was significantly correlated with anti-Dsg1 titer in all visits and the severity of mucosal lesions was correlated with the titer of Dsg3 in the third visit (<0.001, 0.001, 0.016 and 0.015 P value, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Anti-Dsg-1 autoantibodies titers seem to be more useful in showing the extent of the disease and activity in pemphigus with mucocutaneous lesions. BACKGROUND: The cigarette compounds are associated with the increase in the incidence of oral cancer and precancerous lesions. Salivary antioxidant system plays an important role in anti-carcinogenic capacity of saliva. Cotinine, a nicotine metabolite, has a longer half-life in comparison with nicotine and is a suitable marker for exposure to cigarette smoke. This study aims to measure total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and cotinine level in saliva of smokers and non-smokers and compare salivary cotinine level and TAC in each group. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 32 smokers and 34 non-smokers were recruited by consecutive sampling from Department of Oral Medicine, School of Dentistry, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran. Salivary cotinine and TAC concentrations were determined using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique. For data analysis, correlation tests of Spearman, Mann-Whitney U, and independent samples t-test were used. FINDINGS: A significant difference was observed between the two groups in the mean cotinine level and in the mean TAC (P = 0.015, P = 0.027, respectively). TAC showed a weak negative correlation with the cotinine level, but the difference was not significant (P = 0.651). CONCLUSION: Antioxidants are of great importance to smokers because antioxidants are able to scavenge free radicals found in cigarette smoke. According to the results of present study, the salivary TAC in smokers was lower than that of non-smokers, and the salivary cotinine level in smokers was higher than non-smokers. Therefore, smoking endangers the oral cavity health by reducing the salivary TAC. Further studies with a higher sample size and other factors affecting the salivary TAC are needed for definitive comment.

OBJECTIVE: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a debilitating disorder with few limited treatment modalities. Because of the proven association between BMS symptoms, and depression and anxiety, treatment modalities that alleviate the two latter etiologic factors can be clinically effective. Thus, owing to the antidepressant and potential analgesic effects of crocin (as an active constituent of saffron), the present study was performed to compare the effect of crocin and citalopram (as control) on BMS symptoms and depression/anxiety in patients with BMS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present double-blind randomized clinical trial was carried out on BMS patients. Patients were randomly divided into citalopram (n=21) and crocin (n=26) groups and treated for 11 weeks. BMS symptoms (based on Visual Analysis Scale (VAS)), as well as anxiety and depression (based on Hamilton questionnaire) were evaluated at baseline and during the treatment period. Mann-Whitney, Chi-Square test, Independent t-test, Friedman, and Spearman correlation were employed for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Our findings showed a significant effect for crocin on the severity of BMS symptoms, anxiety and depression in BMS patients. CONCLUSION: Crocin can be considered for treatment of BMS subjects with concurrent anxiety and/or depression.

Oral mucositis (OM) is a complication of head and neck cancer (HNC) therapy with negative impact on the quality of life. Although definitive treatment has not yet been established, there is interest towards the use of natural compounds owing to their few side effects. Curcumin has a variety of biological and pharmacological properties including anticancer and anti-inflammatory effects. AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of curcumin in the form of nanomicelle on OM in HNC patients receiving radiotherapy. METHODS: In this clinical trial, 32 HNC patients were allocated to case and control groups, and respectively received nanocurcumin or placebo during radiotherapy. RESULTS: We found a statistically significant difference in the severity of mucositis between the 2 groups at all visits. In contrast to the control-group patients, who all developed OM in the 2nd week of radiotherapy, only 32% of the case group developed OM with no obvious oral or systemic side effects. CONCLUSION: Our data show that nanomicelle curcumin is an effective agent in the prevention of OM or reducing its severity. Thus, the administration of nanocurcumin can be considered as a reasonable approach to hinder the development of OM in HNC patients requiring radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common type of oral cancer, and it is important for it to be diagnosed in early stages. Researchers are interested in exploring the possibility of using biomarkers in the diagnosis of SCC in early stages. One of the detectable biomarkers in the serum is glutathione. Glutathione includes two forms: reduced form (or GSH) and oxidized form (or GSSG). The GSH/GSSG ratio tends to decrease in severe oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to assess the serum levels of GSH and GSSG as well as GSH/GSSG as total antioxidant capacity in patients with head and neck SCC (HNSCC) and to subsequently compare them with healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty HNSCC patients as well as twenty healthy controls were included in the study. A blood sample of 5 ml was obtained from both the case and control groups. GSH, GSSG, and total antioxidant capacity were measured spectrophotometrically. RESULTS: No significant difference in the level of GSSG was observed in the patients from the case and control groups (P = 0.796), whereas the level of GSH and GSH/GSSG was significantly lower in the case group (P = 0.002, P = 0.011, respectively). There was no significant relationship between the level of GSH, GSSG, and total antioxidant capacity, on the one hand, and the stage and grade of the tumor, on the other hand. CONCLUSION: Since the levels of GSH and GSH/GSSG were significantly lower in the case group, GSH/GSSG could be used as a prognostic factor for the early diagnosis of HNSCC.

INTRODUCTION: Oral Mucositis (OM) is a serious complication of chemotherapy that results in painful debilitating inflammation that sometimes ends in interruption of treatment. AIM: The study evaluated the effect of quercetin (a natural flavonoid) on preventing and treating chemotherapy induced OM in patients with blood malignancies. Materials and Methods: This double-blind, placebo controlled randomized trial was carried out on 20 adult patients who underwent high dose chemotherapy for blood malignancies. Patients were divided into two groups (10 patients in the intervention group and 10 patients in the control group). Patients in the intervention group were administered 250 mg quercetin capsules twice daily for four weeks. RESULTS: Nine out of 20 patients developed OM (three in the intervention group and six in the control group). The incidence of OM was lower in the intervention group although it was not statistically significant (p=0.189). The mean severity of OM was higher in the intervention group (2.6 vs 2). Healing time, age, gender, type of malignancy, drug type and duration of OM were not different in two groups. CONCLUSION: The incidence of mucositis was lower in the quercetin group, but mucositis was more severe in the intervention group, which may be due to lower oral health status in the intervention group.

INTRODUCTION: Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is a chronic immunological, mucocutaneous disease with a wide range of clinical appearances. The treatment of oral lichen planus is often difficult and disappointing. AIM: We have studied the efficacy of curcumin, a low molecular weight flavonoid with anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities, in the treatment of OLP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted with a total of 20 OLP patients. The patients were randomly divided into two groups, each treated with curcumin tablets at a dose of 2000 mg/day or placebo for a period of four weeks. Furthermore, the patients of both groups received routine treatment for OLP (i.e. Mouthwash Dexamethasone 0.5 mg and suspension Nystatin 100,000 Units). The baseline data were recorded for each patient. Patients were evaluated on day 14 and after completing the course of treatment. Pain and burning sensation were measured based on the Visual Analogue Scale, and the Thongprasom Index was used for clinical improvement and healing. Mann-Whitney and independent t-test were used to compare the responses between the two groups, p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Our analyses demonstrated no significant difference between the curcumin and placebo treated groups. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, curcumin had no detectable effect in the treatment of OLP. However, a higher dose of curcumin administration and other forms of curcumin with improved bioavailability may be considered in future studies.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS: Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disease. Free radicals and reactive oxygen species play important roles in pathogenesis of oral lichen planus (OLP). Isoprostanes show oxidative stress and are formed by free-radical mediated lipid peroxidation of arachidonic acid and cell membrane phospholipids. PURPOSE: This study was conducted to evaluate the plasma level of 8-isoprostane in patients suffering from erosive and non-erosive forms of OLP. MATERIALS AND METHOD: In this case-control study, 31 patients with OLP and 30 control subjects were enrolled. Plasma samples were obtained and the level of 8-isoprostane was measured with Sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in both groups. The data were analyzed by using two-sample t-test, chi-square and ANOVA tests. RESULTS: The results showed significant increase in the plasma level of 8-isoprostane in OLP group compared with the control group. The results of independent t-test revealed no significant correlation between the plasma level of isoprostane and sex, smoking, or previous treatment. CONCLUSION: Based on the findings of this study, oxidative stress was increased in patients with OLP, reflected by higher concentrations of 8-isoprostane in plasma.

BACKGROUND: Mucositis is one of the acute complications of radiotherapy which can ulcerate oral mucosa and cause severe pain and discomfort which can affect oral normal function. Propolis is a natural source of flavenoid which has antiulcer, antibacterial, antifungal, healing and anti-inflammatory effects. Using such an affordable compound without any bad smell or taste that has reasonable price can help the radiotherapy undergoing patients. OBJECTIVES: Our goal is assessing the preventing and therapeutic effect of propolis in radiotherapy induced mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a randomized triple blind clinical trial, 20 patient were selected randomly to swish and swallow 15 ml of water based extract of propolis mouth wash 3 times a day in the case group (n = 10) and 15 ml placebo mouth wash in control group (n = 10). we use NIC-CTC scale for determining mucositis grading. RESULTS: We use T-test, Man-Whitney, Chi-square, and Friedman as analyzing tests. Case group had significantly (P < 0.05) lower grade of mucositis in all of the follow-ups, but xerostomia is not significantly different in two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This is a pilot study which shows water based extract of propolis efficiently prevents and heals radiotherapy induced mucositis.

INTRODUCTION: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common chronic mucocutaneous disease. Patients with atrophic and erosive types of OLP often have symptoms of soreness, and require proper treatment. The main treatment for OLP has been the administration of topical or systemic corticosteroids. The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of adcortyl cream (triamcinolone acetonide in orabase) with topical pimecrolimus cream for the treatment of erosive OLP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with OLP were enrolled in a single blind clinical trial and assigned to either a pimecrolimus 1% cream group or an adcortyl 0.1% cream group. The medication was applied every day for 2 months and patients were assessed every 2 weeks. RESULTS: The mean lesion size and mean pain and burning sensation scores did not differ between the pimecrolimus and adcortyl cream groups. The pimecrolimus cream was well tolerated. No clinical drug-related adverse events were observed. CONCLUSION: Topical pimecrolimus cream may be recommended as a safe and effective alternative therapy in the treatment of OLP. Pimecrolimus cream is as effective as adcortyl cream in managing the signs and symptoms of OLP.

INTRODUCTION: Oral lesions are among the earliest clinical manifestations of human immunodeficiency (HIV) infection and are important in early diagnosis and for monitoring the progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of oral lesions and their relationship with a number of factors in HIV/AIDS patients attending an HIV center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 110 HIV-positive patients were examined to investigate the prevalence of oral lesions according to the criteria established by the European Community Clearing House on Oral Problems Related to HIV Infection. An independent T-test was used for correlation of oral lesions with CD4+ count and a χ2 test was used for analysis of the relationship of co-infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV), sexual contact, route of transmission, history of drug abuse, and history of incarceration. RESULTS: Most of the cases were male patients (82.7%). The mean age across all participants was 36.2±8.1 years. Rampant carries, severe periodontitis and oral candidiasis were the most notable oral lesions. Oral lesions were more prevalent in patients between 26-35 years of age. There was a significant difference between patients with and without pseudomembranous candidiasis and angular cheilitis according to mean level of CD4+. CONCLUSION: The most common oral presentations were severe periodontitis, pseudomembranous candidiasis and xerostomia.
